I rarely watch television anymore. I usually listen to music or read a good book.
Why... television shows are either so mundane and poorly written ( subject and formula not writing ) that you can tell exactly what is going to happen step by slow plodding step.
If that isnt bad enough, even when they are not leading you by the nose they are re making a old story. Where are the fresh ideas? Where is the acting? Right now I was sitting and thinking about the content of today's blog and in the background I can hear and looking up see a remake of "Little house on the prairie".
Blah..blah.. people.. ranch.. bad guys... good guys... same eventual meet up and conflict then finale.
Meh! Turn the television off or at least find something with content. Hockey? Not a big fan but....
How about picking up a good book? My favorite author is Tim Powers. He writes fantasy out of history and he has dabbled in a little stranger sides. A Link... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Powers to find out about him and a link my three favorite stories... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declare... and...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Call_%28novel%29 and... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Stranger_Tides
On Stranger Tides is the basis for every Pirates of the Caribbean movie as well as a direct plucking of almost everything in the last movie of the same name. If you even like a smidgen of the movie the book will blow you away. What it doesn't have is a swishy pirate...sashaying about.
What you really get is... real believable pirates, a startlingly accurate storyline and some snappy fantasy that makes you want to believe, not just go along with just for now. Now it does have the fountain of youth in it.. but you would hardly recognize it. Sorry, no mermaids being dragged through the swamps nor funny upside down thingies....
Voodoo.... Bocors.. Magic... yes.. Love story .. oh yes.... characters you can empathize with... feel are as real as your neighbor who peeks at you through their curtains every time you take a bag of trash out to the bin. That real.
Take a chance... go read it.
I also read Tom Clancy...http://www.amazon.com/Hunt-Red-October-Tom-Clancy/dp/0425240339/ref=la_B000APF4T2_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1361136925&sr=1-7
Glen Cook... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Cook
Glen Cook is also a great read.... light and funny.
and Keith Laumer...

And David Drake... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer%27s_Slammers
A roaring good read.
What's on your bookshelf?
What is covered with dust... oh...and what is read over and over.. pages bent and binding cracked?
Not that this list is everything I read.. just a top of the pile.

I missed another good day of ballooning today. Looked like the winds were excellent for the top-gunners. Hopefully soon I will hear what happened and who came in first, second and third. I wished I felt good enough to chase along with them and have a good time partying at the tailgate after.
Hopefully next weekend! We can all get together and do that flying thing... Looking forward to it really.
Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon!
