Albuquerque international Balloon Fiesta..Pre Fiesta Preps

No.. I am so not ready... mentally... System wise.. yes.. the gear was ready last week when it was all cleaned and set up correctly in the trailer. I even have a five gallon Jerry can of fuel and the fans are topped off..even the back up 1 liter emergency flask is ready. Clothes, coats, and misc stuff is completely not ready..... Still have to buy ice, soda and water... but that's normal.

A few out of the ordinary items....

Doing the Colorado Springs Labor Day Lift Off  #LDLO over Labor day.. fun but normally we take the month before and the month after off. Rest and pre rest. Not this year.

Did a photo shoot along side a drone on a new corporate balloon. Shot over 2k frames. Over 4k with raw files. Out of that I liked about 78. Took a bunch of the drone and pilots and crew and surrounding area because its always nice to have some other things. That was an awesome if very wet shoot.

Errors on that.. I wore my damn yellow coat... never wear something that bright out. Reflections and standing out is not a good thing. I will locate a nice black jacket and have a little logo put on it. I wore sneakers and they had just watered and cut the field so you got to having wads of cut grass stuck to you everywhere.

I had three cameras out. One Nikon for the 10.5 mm fisheye because you never know what cool shots that will come up with and another Nikon with a 18 to 200 mm lens and then my go to camera, the Sony RX10V4 with its 24 to 600 mm lens. I stuck with the Sony and used the Nikon for backup shots in case something failed on the Sony. Nothing did. Also noting the shots from the Nikon being too soft compared to the crispness of the Sony I didn't forward any of those. The fisheye shots didn't lend to the request so I didn't forward any of those either.

I have been asked to keep everything under lock and key until the balloons unveiling this next weekend so no shots of that yet. Next weekend will be a big blog weekend with Fiestas start as well..

Also out of the ordinary but happily so was that my Daughter and my Granddaughter came into town to visit. We had lots of fun and did a lot of Granddaughter things... mostly watching her favorite you tube videos, playing games and playing with toys... We did get to the Albuquerque Natural Museum and the Explora. Both were fun though the museum is somewhat lacking in hands on things. Explora was fun for everyone including my Son and Daughter. Lots of water to play with and bubble machines and one huge room sized elevator. Pictures hopefully below.

This week will be doing all those last minute things that need to be done before ten days of sleep deprivation and constant flying. Normally I take naps in the afternoon after flying to keep the sleep problem in check. I rarely drink so that never bothers me. Its just that with the stress levels of flying with that many balloons that many days in a row ...well.. it can hit you hard.

One of the things I do think about is out of town or out of country Pilots who rarely fly at this altitude. I like to keep a good eye out for other balloonists.. Not that that is unusual but I do watch out. I want to be ready to maneuver out of their way if they have some trouble adjusting to what we fly in year round. I know what my balloons will do at this altitude and how much time I have to react to flight characteristics. A little extra room in a very crowded airspace is a good thing.

A good rule of thumb for me is 7 seconds from action to result. Unless I push it. Something like driving a car with your foot on the gas and the break pedal. I call it powered control flying.

Over Fiesta field and in congested airspace rapid ascents and or descents is very very dangerous. It is prohibited over the field itself. 200 feet per minute climb or fall... that's it. With the Lindstrand Racer I can ( with clear sky's ) ascend and control my crown vent and or descend fully vented and burning at the same time hard control my altitude, descent rate and stopping area. If you watch the competition portion of the AIBF you will see some very very controlled ascents and descents...especially in the racer envelopes. It is awesome to see the intense control these Pilots show with their systems.

Lastly before the pictures... Mo flew Saturday. hoping to get the Granddaughter up but she was not comfortable with the burner sound so Mo took Mom up for her first flight in MRGM. A nice flight it was too.

Pictures....

Fiesta park corner markers for each grid space set aside for four hot air balloons. Some slippage kicking in my CDOTS.

View from the balloon museum upper deck of concession row.  So many people will pack in there and on the field in a week.

Sandias behind the rotunda.

Rolling clouds f the West mesa.

One of the founding balloonists in Albuquerque at the AAAA meeting for a quick chat.

Mr Mezz chatting before the Pilot Video Showing.

Will had good news on flying over the open spaces and petroglyphs on the West side.

And the video explaining all the rules and reg's and flying process and every other tiny thing you need to know to fly here at the Albuquerque international Balloon Fiesta.

So much talk about PIE and not one cherry pie in evidence.

Drone control. Very cool.

Massive drone.

So much water on the field to make things nice and green.

Large balloon type thing in the sky... a bit washed out.

Inside of Jeffs Lindstrand. Very bright and beautiful.

From basket to crown shot.

Mojos Reverse Gravity Machine from basket to crown.

Everyone is happy.

Its a FIESTA  Balloon!

Mojo and her nicely attached flag.

When you accidentally open your whisper valve with some moisture in your throat.

You get smoke like steam but no damage.

Crisp gore lines and bold colors.

Rainbows without rain.

Putting heat to the air.

Boldness on a beautiful morning.

New procedure before flying I think.

Perspective.

Tail numbers with no tail.

YTIVARG!!  MOJOs Reverse Gravity Machine!

Off they go. Cool box in effect overhead.

600mm reach!!

Here's hoping every day of Fiesta is like Saturday.

Ground tracking through the brush to land.

Soft and slow.

Albuquerque Natural Museum viewpoint.

Black Light on Pilot.

Petrified wood look.

This is my good side.

Explorium's room sized elevator.. with couch chairs and lighted table.

It was a fun long weekend... but there are soon things to get done and delt with...

See you at registration on Thursday at 10am or on the field Saturday morning at 0545!

Blasts from the past

As we are on the cusp of the 2018 Albuquerque international Balloon Fiesta I dropped back to look at all the banners I made over the 2015 16 17 years and why I didn't continue this year. Yeah.. too tired.

Trying to think up a new banner every day was a daunting task and it got tedious and I didn't want to remember how long it was before Fiesta and how much stuff I had yet to do or didn't do at all. Plus there were more events coming up to Fiesta this year....

Now we are ...

days away and its a bit of a rush then not then rush then not...

It always seems way off until September and then you fall into the OMG its almost here I have a thousand things that need doing.... then you fall on the floor and pass out.

Normally I do a few rally's through the year... Fiesta as the start of the balloon year.. then Red Rock Rally in December in Gallup .. Angle fire in June and then Fiesta again... This time we threw in the Colorado Springs labor Day Lift off in there in early September breaking my rule of flying so close to fiesta and chancing last minute damage before the big event. This has thrown off my inner working worse than normal.

12 days out I have the system all cleaned and ready to go. She will sit and rest until the morning of the Friday before and only go get inflated for a group of school kids at Emerson elementary who rarely get to see any balloons. They love to have us and we enjoy their enthusiasm. Its a good place in mind to start the upcoming events.

Registration is on the 4th and 5th. I will go on the 4th and be there waiting as it my natural thing before they open up. I just love the excitement of it and the fresh fun of all the volunteers who try to make it fun and great for the Pilots.

Every little bit of Fiesta is exciting.... and that comes out in my shots...

Things still needing done..... I've lost my list.

So that leads me to not doing any banners.... so here below are some of my favorites..... from 2017

Because being selected for the AIBF is a BIG thing! Golden Ticket Big.

As someone will invariably ask.. and Calvin lends to this kind of thing easily.. Thanks Bill.

Postcards from 600 feet.

Never hold a sign....ever.... Ted.

Due to our balloon name we fall under all the crazy stuff... and I like it!

Czech for apart Czech pilot.

Love my Lindstrand and I go out of my way to tell everyone about it... so don't slow down if your passing me or you will get an ear full.

And then we have very emotive Eric...

Again.. Bill Watterson's Calvin drops in... for the day of 46,47,48,49 and each days event.

My Son for his very expressive self and how he makes me laugh.

And on the 2nd to last day and last day my Granddaughters face getting real close... She is so cute!

Especially with pancake and syrup on her face.

2016 favs are below...

194 days till the 2016 balloon fiesta... 194 banners.. I was wiped out.

Cranking on the GIMP program for some fun visuals.

Lifting warning signs off the nets to tweak for ballooning is fun... Teather use is not up for discussion.

Highperactive doing pictures out front of the Sid Cutter building. Yes.. we inflated her and the crew walked her about so we could get some good shots.

Down to 162... So many balloons in this non edited for content shot.

I started to try and link my banners with my logo and that was just a stupid amounts of work.

A cool logo I edited... Going on a shirt or two.

My granddaughter is a hoot. Another edit of a fav meme. I can draw stick figures and I love the little Emmers.

2015.....

I started hiding the countdown numbers and there were some very good people who would find them even when I made it insanely hard.

This was a bit easy.

The kids at a school we did for Albuquerque Aloft... They wanted to help...so we had them snake the envelope into the bag.

Here I had to circle the number because no one found it on thsi day.

The old British version of the Uncle Sam poster.. modified for myself.

And if Calvin can be used so can Bill and Opus...

Another character who brightens ballooning for everyone. Thanks Kurt!

And that's how it feels for those of us enmeshed in Fiesta every year... everything else kinda stops..

And I was done at the end of this year.... Fiesta field cleared and just prior to all the launch grid markers being planted.

One of the old posters that I am editing to fit ballooning...

And the pin design. But in silver instead of gold.

The first of the quad pin sets I am creating below. I have the designs for the other two but they arn't going to be seen until just prior to their molds being struck.

Brain is percolating with ideas all the time but my ability to put that on paper lacks the formal training I should have gotten when it was available. Now it takes hours to do what should only be minutes... ah well.. at least I can do it.

I need Ice, Soda, Water, Snacks, and and and...... but that will wait until just before the start of the festivities....

Next weekend perhaps I can show the process... Dunno... we shall see what comes up...
